4 Types of Sheds at BackYard Storage
Every shed seems to look different! It can be hard to pick out a shed when you don't know where to start. In fact, many consumers in all industries experience choice overload, a phenomenon where too many choices actually evokes negative emotions. At BackYard Storage, we separate our sheds into four categories to help combat this overload and make shopping more enjoyable.
In this article, we'll explain the differences between each category and the various ways you can use each shed (but, of course, the sky is the limit when it comes to sheds).
We categorize the first two sheds based on roof style.
- Utility – A utility shed is the most common shed style in the United States. It has a traditional gabled (or A-Frame) roof and is relatively short in height. Utility sheds have a roof that mirrors the roof pitch of a conventional house. If you are concerned about property appearance, utility sheds offer a seamless, aesthetic quality to your backyard. Utility sheds are also installed quickly and easily, which can be a bonus for busy homeowners. The use of utility sheds goes as far as the imagination. Use it for storage, as a gardening hub for potting your next plant addition, or even turn it into an office. One thing's for sure – it's an American classic for a reason.
- Barn – Imagine the most basic barn you can think of: red siding, hay on the ground, and the tell-tale gambrel roof. A gambrel roof provides for more loft space than a traditional gabled roof, and most farmhouse barns use this roof shape to store hay and other feed. For a barn-shed, the uses for this extra space are endless! Maybe you're storing taller items that need a few more inches to fit. Maybe your barn-shed has a loft or two. These can be used for extra garden tool storage, a place for a cool seating area, or a designated home for your seasonal décor. A barn-shed can have anywhere from zero to multiple lofts at varying heights.
We categorize the next two sheds based on features. Many times, these sheds also have utility or barn-style roofs, but the feature category always determines the name of the shed. Does it have a gambrel roof and a porch? Check out what that would be called below!
- Cabin – We classify a cabin shed as any shed with a porch attached to it, no matter the roof style. Cabin sheds and their rustic porches add a quaint aesthetic quality and are some of our favorite sheds here at BackYard Storage. Because of the added "outdoor" area, a cabin shed offers some unique uses. Really into barbecuing? Make the porch into the ultimate grilling getaway. Have little ones? Cabins serve as the coolest playhouse on the block. Just need some outdoor relaxation? Deck it out with lawn chairs, and watch the world go by! This, plus the benefit of the shed interior, makes the cabin shed a great, dual-purpose space.
- Garage – This one is easy. Any shed that has a garage door attached is… a garage shed! Garage sheds are great for storage just like any other shed, but they're also great for – you guessed it – storing automobiles. If your house doesn't have a garage, and you're looking for something a little more secure than a carport, a garage shed can be a great alternative, just make sure the flooring on the garage shed is set up to withstand the vehicle's weight. If you do have a garage and just need an extra place for the kids' bikes or your motorcycle workshop, a garage shed is also a great solution.
